Let’s Talk About Tina

So a little while ago, I posted about Tina Fey’s appearance on SNL this past weekend, specifically her “Women’s News” segment on Weekend Update.  Some people seemed to be very upset that I would dare to speak ill of Tina Fey.

Now don’t get me wrong, while I do think there are a lot of problematic things about Tina Fey’s comedy and writing, I do think she is a great writer, very funny, and can be considered a feminist…most days.  I think she’s done a lot of things to advance women in comedy and in Hollywood.

But does that mean that we should not evaluate and criticize any of her work?  I sure hope not, because a lot of it is problematic.  I’m sorry, but there are some very problematic, privileged stuff that goes on on 30 Rock.

And her segment on Weekend Update was not ok.  Blaming mistresses for affairs is not ok and is just plain slut-shaming.  I’m not saying that mistresses have no fault in these kinds of situations, but the media and society in general often seems to focus on the short comings of the mistress as opposed to the faults of the husband who is the one who cheated on his wife.

And this whole “don’t take it so seriously, it’s just a bit on a comedy show” thing just makes me mad.  These “jokes” and bits on shows are a reflection of the thoughts and values of society.  Obviously there are a lot of people out there who think this is true which is why they think it’s funny.  Please don’t tell me how to react to things.  If I find something upsetting, then I find it upsetting and I have the right to voice my concern about it.

Yes, in that post, I did say that I was disappointed in Tina Fey.  Which I am.  But that does not mean that I was attacking her whole person.  I was criticizing one part of her very large repertoire.  It is important to be able to analyze and evaluate pop culture, especially the pop culture that you like (which Tina Fey usually falls into the category of, for me).
