Adventures in a Bookstore
So there’s this new book out called The Obama Diaries. I have not read this book, but I know that it is meant to be a satire. That the woman who wrote this book did not actually find President Obama’s diary and publish it.
But I had this customer come up to me the other day to proclaim that this book was fact. I tried to explain that it was meant to be satire, but she would not have any of it. She explained to me that if they published this stuff and it wasn’t real that they would be sued and there were quotes in it, they had to be real. So apparently it really is fact that Obama is a Muslim and Nancy Pelosi needs to be committed to a mental institution, according to this woman.
Part of my job is being polite to the customers, but it took me a lot of effort not to start laughing because some of the things she said (during the 20 minutes that she was talking at me) were just so absurd. Being polite to customers sometimes means not arguing with them. What would you do in a situation like this?
